Prominent industrialist Abdul Monem, the founder of conglomerate Abdul Monem Ltd, has died in hospital care at the age of 86.
He passed away at Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital around 10 am Sunday, said Sumit Chakrabarty, senior brand manager of Igloo, an ice-cream unit of the company.
Monem was admitted to Square Hospital on May 17 after suffering a stroke. He was later transferred to the CMH.
He will be laid to rest in his native Brahmanbaria, according to officials of the company.
A civil engineer by profession, Monem launched his company in 1956 and oversaw its expansion and diversification over the years.
AML, one of the largest business conglomerates in Bangladesh, is the bottler of Coca Cola in the country, producer of renowned ice-cream brand Igloo, Igloo milk and dairy products, Igloo food items and snacks, manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, maker of auto bricks, bitumen and other selected construction materials, according to the company website.
Monem left behind his wife, two sons, three daughters and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death. His two sons, Mainuddin Monem and Mohiuddin Monem.
It also owns AM Sugar Refinery Ltd., AM Rice Bran Oil, ServicEngine BPO, and AM Securities and Financial Services Ltd among other companies.
In 2015, the company was awarded permission to develop one of the country‘s first private economic zones — Abdul Monem Economic Zone (AMEZ) in Daudkandi, Munshiganj — on its land of 216 acres.
For his contribution to the business sector through his diversified conglomerate, which he ran alongside his two sons, Abdul Monem was awarded the ‘Commercially Important Person (CIP)’ status by the government several times as bellows;
